LONGMONT, Colo.—A father whose 2-year-old son was presumed drowned after being towed behind a boat in an inflatable raft was sentenced Tuesday to six years in prison after a judge revoked his probation.
Gil Smith, of Longmont, had been sentenced in January to 60 days in jail and five years of probation after pleading guilty to child abuse resulting in death. Jay’s body was never found after he disappeared July 15, 2006, on Carter Lake near Loveland.
A guilty plea last month for a traffic case in Boulder County meant Smith violated his probation in the death of his son, resulting in prison. He pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and menacing with a deadly weapon and he was sentenced to three years in community corrections.
