SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake County prosecutors have charged an ex-convict with the strangulation death of a Murray woman who befriended him while she was doing church work at the Utah State Prison.
James Tolbert, 41, will face one count each of aggravated murder and aggravated robbery. Both are first-degree felonies, and Tolbert could face the death penalty.
Third District Court papers filed in support of the charges say police found Ann Poulson dead in her Murray home on Oct. 9 with a belt strapped around her neck. A state medical examiner ruled that Poulson, 68, died of strangulation.
Tolbert is on parole from the prison. In 1987 he was convicted of killing his wife.
Police have been unable to locate Tolbert.
