A mask has the power to speak even when its wearer is silent, mask-maker Mike Romoth said.
If that’s true, what would a Rockies-inspired mask say?
“Denver has got such a crazy vibe right now,” said Romoth, who crafted two leather masks to commemorate the Rockies’ playoff run. “I like to mark time with my art. This is a good time to mark.”
The masks are buccaneer- like skulls adorned with purple and black crowns.
The crowns are inlaid with silver-plated “Rockies” lettering and gilded with feathers, horse-hair tassels, and amethyst and onyx beads.
Romoth, a 10-year mask-making veteran, said he would like to donate the masks for auction to benefit a charity.
For now, the masks sit in his American Indian and Haitian- voodoo influenced studio speaking their own blend of Rockies charm.
Almost sounds like “World Series champions.”
