Seasonal lawn care. Even if the weather outside is frightful, the lawn can look delightful. Follow these cold-weather maintenance tips from :

Fertilize. Fall is the most important time to fertilize cool-season and warm-season grasses.

Eliminate broadleaf weeds. Autumn is when broadleaf weeds such as dandelions and ground ivy are most vulnerable to weed killers.

Continue mowing. Do it every week or so until grass has stopped growing.

Seed or overseed. Lay seed now so the lawn gets a head start in the spring.

De-thatch, aerate or both. Reduce dead grass stems and roots.

Test soil. It is the only way to determine the pH and nutrient needs of your lawn.

Green sweepstakes. The winner of Dura- flame’s “Get Stoked to Go Green” Sweepstakes will receive $20,000 to make his or her home more eco-friendly, and an in-home consultation with HGTV green design expert Linda Woodrum. The sweepstakes starts Nov. 1 and runs through Dec. 31. Entry forms at . Here are a few of Woodrum’s go-green decorating tips:

Use “green” paint. Major paint companies now make nontoxic, Earth-wise products.

Choose “green” upholstery. Eco-friendly fabric slipcovers are a lower-cost alternative to covering furniture with the non-toxic washable linens, cottons or linen-blend furniture fabrics now available.

Stay dirt alert. Cutting down the dirt tracked into the home can be very “green” as it reduces the need to use cleaning products and cuts down on vacuuming. Provide a chair and storage space (think cubbies) by the doors where friends and family can leave their shoes.
