An Aurora homeowner was seriously burned Wednesday night when a fire broke out in his basement.

The Aurora Fire Department said today that crews went to the home at 3075 Xanadu St. in north Aurora about 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters found the rapid and intense fire had almost burned itself out by the time they arrived.

The homeowner and his wife were on a neighbor’s lawn.

The man had serious burns on his upper body and was taken to University Hospital in Aurora.

Damage to the house was estimated at $100,000.

Officials are still investigating how the fire started.
