DENVER—David Ortiz will play first base for Boston when the World Series resumes Saturday night, and Kevin Youkilis will be benched as the Red Sox adjust to life without a designated hitter.

Mike Lowell will remain at third for the Red Sox, who have a 2-0 Series lead against the Colorado Rockies.

Ortiz, bothered by a left knee that will need surgery, worked out at first base Friday. He played seven games at first this year.

“They won’t let us play with all three of them,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. “It’s a difficult situation to be in, but I don’t have any second guessing about what we’re doing.”

Francona said that if the Red Sox have a lead in the late innings, Youkilis would take over at first.
