Counting calories
If you’re often at a loss for what healthy choices are hiding on a restaurant, fast food or holiday menu, Charles Stuart Platkin offers plenty of details in “The Diet Detective’s Calorie Bargain Bible” (Fireside Book, $13). For example, when you’re confronted with a tempting array of pies at Thanksgiving, what’s the better dessert choice: pumpkin, apple or pecan? Platkin says pumpkin’s the best, at 270 calories; apple pie isn’t bad at 350, but watch out for pecan, which typically packs more than 700 calories per slice. And you’d better skip the whipped cream (80-100 calories) and vanilla Haagen-Dazs (an extra 270 calories).
