DENVER—The main page of Colorado’s state government Web site disappeared briefly on Tuesday and was replaced by a message saying “It works!” on an otherwise blank screen.

The page was quickly restored and computer experts were trying to figure out what happened, said Wil Alston, deputy director of the governor’s communications office.

Republicans jokingly accused Democrats, who control both houses of the Legislature, of trying to send subliminal messages.

Aston, whose boss, Gov. Bill Ritter, is also a Democrat, said he wasn’t immediately sure what happened.

Evan Dreyer, spokesman for Ritter, later said the organization that oversees and manages all state Web sites discovered the glitch happened during an internal upgrade to the operating system.

One of the technicians inadvertently changed a setting that caused a 20 minute interruption, Dreyer said.

Dreyer said the organization is now conducting a detailed analysis to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
