At its Nov. 8 meeting in Colorado Springs, the Colorado Wildlife Commission will consider a reduction in the price of antlerless deer licenses as a means of improving harvest in certain game management units in which population has risen above desired levels. A similar measure was enacted a half-decade ago for nonresident cow elk.
The commission also will discuss 2008 turkey hunting regulations, the establishment of a shed antler season and modification of restrictions on the transport of deer and elk from CWD-positive areas.
The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Doubletree Hotel, 1775 E. Cheyenne Mountain Blvd.
DOW award. The Colorado Division of Wildlife has been presented the National Blue Heron Award, given by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for outstanding contribution to the conservation of waterfowl habitat.
The award particularly recognizes the effectiveness of the Colorado Wetlands Program, an initiative begun in 1997 that has become a model for agencies throughout the country. DOW has helped leverage $70 million in partner funds to support 700 projects that protect 187,500 acres across the state through fee title acquisition or conservation easements. Another 62,500 acres have been restored on other properties.
