BOULDER, Colo.—A judge’s preliminary ruling says a man accused of slashing a college student with a knife is incompetent to stand trial, but the suspect was ordered to undergo a more extensive evaluation.
Kenton Astin, 39, faces charges of attempted murder and assault. Police say he slashed freshman Michael Knorps across the neck on the University of Colorado’s Boulder campus on Aug. 27, the first day of classes.
Boulder County Judge John Stavely issued his preliminary ruling Monday.
He ordered the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo to do a second evaluation and scheduled a Dec. 10 hearing for a final decision.
Prosecutor Bruce Langer said he would until then before deciding whether to appeal.
Knorps, 17, of Chicago was briefly hospitalized but has returned to classes.
