An Aurora man pleaded guilty Monday to arson for starting an apartment fire with fireworks.

Steven Christopher Valdez, 43, will be sentenced Dec. 10 in Jefferson County District Court, according to the district attorney’s office.

Valdez was at a friend’s home July 6 when he set off a spinning-type firework that ignited a bush, sparking a blaze at the Ridgemoor apartments, 652 Urban Court, in Lakewood.

After the bush caught fire, Valdez got into his vehicle and drove away. He was later arrested.

The fire left 11 families homeless.

Valdez faces a possible sentence of two to six years in prison.
