Briefs: Southwest’s daily flights from Denver, up by 14, include new destinations

Southwest Airlines today launches flights from Denver to Seattle; Albuquerque; Amarillo, Texas; Oklahoma City; and Austin, Texas.

Southwest is also adding additional flights to its existing Denver-Nashville, Tenn., route and to its Denver-Salt Lake City route. Southwest is adding 14 daily flights, for a total of 56 daily flights out of Denver.

Filing shows Janus holdings in Japan’s largest electronics retailer

Janus Capital Management LLC, a Denver-based investment advisory firm, holds more than 5 percent of Yamada Denki, according to a filing with Japan’s Ministry of Finance.

The advisory firm held 4.8 million shares of Yamada Denki Co., Japan’s largest electronics retailer, as of Wednesday, according to the document filed Friday.

Google News works on mismatches

NEW YORK — Engineers at Google Inc. were working Friday to resolve a problem on the company’s Google News site that has seen some photos and news stories being mismatched.

Searches conducted on Google News occasionally returned photos from Reuters Group PLC that didn’t match the stories they were listed next to, such as a shot of bunches of vegetables that appeared by a story about a Japanese merger firm.

Heating needs can be met

NEW YORK — The price of natural gas in New York declined as inventories rose to a record, indicating supplies are adequate to meet winter heating needs, and forecasters eased their outlook for cold weather in the large consuming regions later this month.

Stockpiles advanced 66 billion cubic feet to 3.509 trillion cubic feet in the week ended Oct. 26, the Energy Department reported Thursday. Gas for December delivery declined 20.7 cents, or 2.4 percent, to $8.43 per million British thermal units Friday on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Berkshire Hathaway profits jump 64 percent

OMAHA — Berkshire Hathaway Inc. reported a 64 percent jump in third-quarter profit Friday on strong investment gains.

Berkshire said it earned $4.55 billion, or $2,942 per share, during the quarter that ended Sept. 30. That’s up from last year’s third-quarter net income of $2.77 billion, or $1,797 per share.

Joint effort planned in try to buy Interstate Bakeries Corp.

KANSAS CITY, MO. — Supermarket billionaire Ron Burkle’s investment firm, Yucaipa Cos., said Friday it would join Bimbo Bakeries USA and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in an effort to buy Interstate Bakeries Corp.

Kansas City-based Interstate Bakeries, which filed for bankruptcy protection in September 2004, has already lined up about $400 million in financing from specialty lender Silver Point Finance LLC if or when it emerges from bankruptcy.
