An editorial in The Brighton Blade newspaper says city officials have not produced evidence showing a proposed baseball-stadium project would be successful.
Voters on Tuesday will be asked to approve a 0.2-cent increase in the sales tax rate to finance the 4,000-seat complex.
The Blade, in a Wednesday editorial, said its reservations are based “on the inability of the city leaders to give strong financial numbers showing how the project will be successful and pay for itself. There is no signed contract from any baseball franchise guaranteeing the stadium would be put to the use it is intended for. There is only a promise.”
The newspaper also contends city leaders violated state election laws by not producing a factual summary, including arguments both for and against the proposal.
This item has been clarified in this online archive. Originally, it indicated the Brighton Blade had pulled its endorsement of the stadium initiative. Instead, the paper raised many questions about the stadium’s potential for success.
