On Thursday mornings, even novice cyclists can keep up with Tour de France veteran cyclist Ron Kiefel, who teaches a group cycling class at a new fitness center in Wheat Ridge.

The Wheat Ridge Cyclery Fitness Center is part of the recently expanded bicycle shop founded by Kiefel’s father, Eugene, also a formidable cyclist.

On its face, an indoor group cycling class is a weird concept – a bunch of stationary bicycles arranged to face an instructor on another stationary bike.

But choreographed to energizing music, a good instructor leads classes on sprints, hill climbs and endurance work that uncannily parallels a hard ride outdoors. Because each rider controls the resistance knob on individual bicycles, spin classes are as accessible to newbies as they are to racers.

Kiefel’s class fills quickly, so call first to reserve a bike, or try one of the other spin classes offered daily.
