AT&T is launching its third-generation wireless network along the Front Range and in Colorado’s ski areas today, providing users with much faster Internet speeds.

AT&T wireless customers with 3G-enabled phones will be able to surf the Web on their phones at speeds averaging between 400 and 700 kilobits per second. The speeds can reach up to 1 megabit per second. Previously, Colorado customers had access only to AT&T’s Edge network, which has average speeds of 75-135 kbps.

The 3G launch in Colorado is the company’s largest for a market in terms of the number of customers who already have 3G-enabled phones, said Jace Barbin, vice president of the Rocky Mountain Region for AT&T.

The launch covers users from Colorado Springs to Greeley and in the mountains from Breckenridge to Gypsum.

AT&T spent about $130 million over the past two years upgrading its network in Colorado, Barbin said. He said the company plans to spend at least that much over the next two years.
