A car struck and killed a 6-year-old boy Wednesday after he dropped some library books in the street and stopped to pick them up.
The child and his 14-year-old sister were coming from the Athmar Park library branch and crossing mid-block near West Mississippi Avenue and South Tejon Street, said Denver Police Department spokesman Sonny Jackson.
He was hit after retrieving the books as he ran to catch up with his sister at about 4:40 p.m.
The boy, whom Jackson wouldn’t identify because he is a juvenile, was declared dead in an ambulance taking him to Denver Health Medical Center.
The driver of the car, James Hoehl of Denver, stopped and tried to help the child, Jackson said.
Hoehl couldn’t be reached for comment today.
