The Community College of Denver named five finalists for the president’s post Monday, including a former president of Los Angeles City College.

The five finalists are Steve Maradian, who retired from Los Angeles City College; Lawrence Cox, provost of Stark State College of Technology in Ohio; Karen Clos-Bleeker, chief academic officer of Temple College in Texas; Algie Gatewood, president of Portland (Ore.) Community College, Cascade campus; and Bob Rizzuto, former vice president for finance at Colorado State University.

The search comes after former president Christine Johnson was fired last summer for financial aid problems and for lying to state officials about money in the school’s reserve account, officials in the state community college system said.

The search committee said Monday that it hopes a new president will start in January.
