DENVER—Xcel Energy says it will cut its carbon dioxide emissions by 10 percent over the next 10 years—partly by using renewable energy sources and by replacing older coal-fired power plants with natural gas.

The company says it could add 800 megawatts of wind power and 254 megawatts of solar power by the year 2015. That is according to its Colorado Resource Plan, which is filed with state regulators every four years.

Xcel Energy’s last resource plan was developed in 2003. That plan estimated carbon dioxide emissions would increase by 20 percent by 2020.
