For all the uncertainty surrounding the Broncos’ season, there is one thing we can be sure of. Given the mediocrity that has permeated the AFC West, there won’t be a wild-card team coming out of the division.
The task, then, is simple: Win the West.
At least it sounds simple. But to do it, the Broncos would have to do something they may not be capable of. As in, reel off a winning streak.
They won their first two games of the season. Since then, the Broncos have lost three in a row and not won back-to-back games. That is not, repeat, not the way to win the division.
No, football isn’t baseball, the ultimate game of streaks. But getting to the playoffs in the NFL is virtually impossible without running off a lengthy winning streak.
The Broncos are no different than other teams. They’ve won the division 10 times since their inception in 1960. In eight of those 10 seasons, they’ve had at least a four-game winning streak. Their winning streaks have included nine games, 10 games, 13 games and three more of six games.
Given all the Broncos’ issues, do they have a lengthy winning streak in them? Only time will tell, but, at the moment, winning back-to-back games sounds good.
