The Bowl Championship Series will expand the pool of teams eligible for at-large bids if it’s faced with a shortage of qualified contenders when the regular season is over.

BCS rules state a team must have at least nine victories and finish in the top 14 of the final standings to qualify for an at-large bid to one of the five marquee bowl games. But because no conference can have more than two teams, including its champion, in the BCS games, officials were facing the possibility of not having enough eligible teams to fill the 10 slots this season.

The BCS announced Tuesday that if fewer than 10 of the top 14 teams in the standings are eligible for an at-large bid, the qualifying standard will extend to the top 18. If enough teams are still not available, the standard would be pushed back four spots.

Paterno’s salary must be disclosed. The salaries of Penn State coach Joe Paterno and the school’s top administrators must be disclosed by the state retirement system, the state Supreme Court ruled.

The 4-2 decision said the Commonwealth Court, which had ordered the disclosure, properly balanced the public’s interest in knowing details about retirement system finances against the effects disclosure might have on reputations and personal security.

Purdue receiver off team. Purdue’s Selwyn Lymon was dismissed after being charged with drunken driving for the second time this year.

Rattlers fire Carter. Florida A&M fired coach Rubin Carter, a former Broncos nose tackle, after the Rattlers finished 3-8 this season. Carter played for the Broncos from 1975-86.
