Burger King, the nation's second-biggest hamburger chain was expected to announce Thursday, Aug. 28, 1997 that it would add the Big King sandwich, shown in this handout photo from Burger King, to its regular menu across the country, in direct competition with the Big Mac from industry leader McDonald's. The sandwiches contain two beef patties, cheese and a special sauce, as the Big Mac does. But the Big King will have 75 percent more beef, 5.6 ounces versus 3.2 ounces, and won't have the extra slice of bread that separate the patties in the Big Mac.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Burger King Corp., in a move that could ignite a fast-food discounting war, plans to test a $1 double cheeseburger that would challenge one of McDonald’s Corp.’s best-selling items. “It is our belief that the dollar double cheeseburger is the most powerful weapon our competitor has to continue their growth and steal disproportionate share from the category,” Burger King’s chief marketing officer said in a note disclosing the upcoming test, which was e-mailed recently to employees and franchisees. The nation’s No. 2 hamburger chain, Burger King said it will feature a larger double cheeseburger than McDonald’s at a heavily discounted rate in three unnamed U.S. markets early next year. Burger King restaurants now typically charge well over $2 for that sandwich.
