Aurora City Councilwoman Molly Markert appeared in Arapahoe County Court today and waived formal advisement of charges against her in an incident at a high school in which she is accused of shoving a dean.
Markert is accused of third-degree assault, harassment and interference with school staff. All are misdemeanors.
Prosecutors say Markert shoved Smoky Hill High School dean Preston Davis in April as she tried to enter a closed-door graduation meeting that had already begun.
According to a police report, Davis had been instructed not to allow latecomers into the meeting. He told police that Markert tried to gain access, saying: “Do you know who I am?”
Davis said Markert “jammed her forearm” into his chest. When he tried to explain the policy, she said, “This is stupid,” according to the report.
Davis said Markert made contact with him again, shoving him against the door and causing him to stumble and jam his left pinkie finger.
The meeting that night was to discuss behavior expectations for a graduation ceremony. Markert’s daughter graduated in the spring.
If convicted on all counts, Markert face three years in jail and up to $6,500 in fines.
Her next court date is Feb. 21.
