Denver’s Debra Fine, author of “The Fine Art of Small Talk,” was on “Today” Sunday to talk about talking with your mouth full.
“We’re here with family and looking forward to a joyous time,” Fine says. “But I think we let down our guard and become 12 years old again. It’s a recipe for disaster.”
Especially at the kids table!
Fine offers 10 examples of what not to say near the turkey today.
“Are you two ever going to get married?”
“No, thanks, I gave up drinking after I saw the toll it took on you.”
“When are you two going to make me a grandmother?”
“Are you dating anyone?”
“Aren’t you full yet?”
“Why aren’t you eating anything?”
“Did you get a job yet?”
“I see you still can’t be bothered with ironing a blouse.”
“How is it your son looks just like you, and your daughter looks like she could be from a different family?”
“Did you cook this yourself? Or did you just thaw it out?”
Snow business. The mountains could use some snow — even if it’s snowing as you read this.
Aspen Mountain and Snowmass are set to open today. Maybe. But according to the Glenwood Springs Post Independent, there was so little snow in Aspen this week that a film crew had to shoot a commercial at Arapahoe Basin for the Winter X Games, which will be held in Aspen Jan. 24-27.
Studio. KBCO is ready to release Vol. 19 of its “Studio C” series — recordings of live mini-concerts played in the station’s state-of- the-art studio. Melissa Etheridge started it all by playing an impromptu set in 1988. More than 1,000 artists have done it since. The CDs always sell out within hours — with proceeds going to Boulder County AIDS Project. The CDs are available at 8 a.m. Dec. 1 at Cricket Wireless stores for $10. It’s a nice collection, with songs from John Mayer, Modest Mouse, KT Tunstall, the Shins, Joan Armatrading, Jewel, Jonny Lang, Chris Thile and Jet.
City spirit. Restaurants serving the big meal today include Chinook, 1515, Opus, Maggiano’s and L’Atelier. Albin and Melanie Ulle, organizers of the Santa Claus Pub Crawl and stars of last summer’s “1,000 Places to See Before You Die,” welcomed Josephine Clementine Ulle to the world Sunday night. They’re home today for a Thanksgiving to remember. When Barry Bonds was indicted Nov. 15 on perjury charges, he was on a hunting trip in Colorado with teammate Ryan Klesko — but no gun-totin’ sightems. Wednesday was the annual Lighting of Mezcal, so you missed it. Friday is the first Lighting of Tambien at 7 p.m., 250 Steele St. I don’t know why it’s a perfect match, but it is: Kids from Colorado-based Up With People will be wearing shoes from Colorado-based Crocs as they march in today’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Sez who: “Thanksgiving, man! Not a good day to be my pants.” Kevin James
