MOUNTAINAIR, N.M.—Firefighters are holding out hope this afternoon that a wintery blast will arrive and help corral a 7,500-acre wildfire.
The Ojo Peak Fire had charred several structures in the Manzano Mountains.
Cibola National Forest spokeswoman Karen Takai says precipitation would be a great Thanksgiving present.
The blaze was turned over today to a Southwest Incident Management Type I Team, relieving Cibola’s Mountainair ranger district and its employees.
Takai says the team has a larger organizational structure that could respond faster in the event the fire becomes larger.
Although precipitation is expected, the potential for strong gusty east winds remains as a cold front moves through the state.
The fire is 5 percent contained.
