Last week’s midweek snowstorm helped give Colorado ski resorts some lift during the first few days of the holiday weekend.
Snowmass opened Thanksgiving day and had about 1,000 visitors. Another couple thousand visitors showed up Friday when Aspen Mountain opened for skiing.
“For us, at Thanksgiving, that’s a good turnout,” said Jeff Hanle, a spokesman for Aspen Skiing Co., which owns Aspen and Snowmass. “It’s not great, it’s not a historic high, but we’re really happy with the turnout given how late the snow came.”
On Friday, resorts were reporting anywhere from no new snow to 9 new inches over the past 48 hours. No ski area had a midmountain base of more than 19 inches, a far cry from the bountiful snow depths of Thanksgiving 2006.
But some fresh snow and the holiday helped Copper Mountain, which opened Nov. 2, enjoy its busiest weekend so far this season, said spokeswoman Lauren Pelletreau.
“Thanksgiving is typically always a big weekend for us,” Pelletreau said. “We see a lot of folks for the first time for the season.”
