BOULDER, Colo.—Anti-spyware vendor Webroot Software Inc. said Tuesday it has acquired a United Kingdom-based company that will help it move into e-mail and Web protection services.

Terms of the agreement between Webroot and Email Systems Ltd. of Westerham, United Kingdom, were not disclosed. The two will continue operating in existing markets for the near future, and Webroot said it plans to ramp up hiring to accommodate growth.

The privately owned Email Systems uses technology called “software as a service” for email and Web management and protection services without requiring customers to download software to their computers.

Mike Irwin, Webroot’s chief operating officer, said the combined company will offer multilayered security services.

Email Systems has at least 1,500 business clients worldwide. Boulder-based Webroot, which also is privately held, offers security software to businesses and consumers worldwide and is known for its Spy Sweeper anti-spyware software.
