BOULDER COUNTY — A 68-year-old Boulder man was reported killed Tuesday when a tree fell on him in Rocky Mountain National Park.
The report came in about 2:30 p.m. from a man who said he was hiking with a companion about a mile and a half from the trailhead at the entrance of the Wild Basin area, park spokesman Larry Frederick said.
“The reporting party said a tree fell and hit his hiking partner and that the party was unresponsive,” Frederick said.
Frederick reported later in the evening that the hiker was dead when rangers arrived at the accident site, about 2 miles up Sand Beach Trail.
The area the hikers were using is popular with locals and hiking enthusiasts, Frederick said.
It’s the southeast corner of the park, closest to the metro area and near the town of Allenspark. “It gets a lot of traffic, especially this time of year, because the elevation is not too high and there’s not much snow,” Frederick said.
