The recent sale of the massive Forbes Trinchera Ranch in Costilla County apparently will have little impact on the Ranching for Wildlife operation whereby dozens of Colorado public hunters gain access to hunt deer and elk.

Louis Moore Bacon, chairman of Moore Capital Management, purchased the 171,400-acre ranch from the Forbes estate for $175 million. The property, part of the Sangre de Cristo Spanish Land Grant, was purchased by the late Malcolm Forbes, scion of the publishing family, in 1969.

Bacon, a resident of North Carolina, is listed among the 400 wealthiest Americans. A noted environmentalist, he in 1992 established the Moore Charitable Foundation, focusing on protection of natural resources. The foundation has donated numerous conservation easements along the East Coast.

A Bacon spokesman said he plans to retain the present use of the ranch, which includes a private hunting preserve component that, under the RFW agreement, allows public hunters to harvest a specified number of animals, almost exclusively females.
