RICHMOND, Va. — Energy company Dominion Resources Inc. has filed an application to build an additional nuclear reactor at its North Anna Power Station to keep up with consumer electricity needs, company executives said Wednesday.

Richmond-based Dominion is the third company to file a complete application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Federal regulators last week approved an early site permit for a third nuclear reactor at the power station in Louisa County, about 60 miles north of Richmond.

While Dominion has not committed itself to building the reactor, it wants to maintain the option to utilize the power as energy needs grow, Dominion chairman Thomas Farrell II said at a news conference.

Should the application for a combined operating license be approved, Dominion could start construction in 2010 and be operational by 2015, the company said.

The NRC predicts it will get new combined construction and operating-license applications for as many as 29 reactors nationwide over the next three years. The Associated Press
