ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK — A tree fell on two 68-year-old hikers in Rocky Mountain National Park on Tuesday, killing one and briefly stunning the other.

Park spokesman Larry Frederick said volunteers have retrieved the body and were bringing it out. He said the wind, which had gusted up to an estimated 50 mph, was still blowing trees down when rescuers arrived. Much of the area is populated by lodgepole pines, which don’t have deep roots. The two men were hiking in the Wild Basin area when wind blew down the tree about 2:30 p.m. Frank Waterhouse, building and grounds manager at the Wild Basin Lodge and Event Center, said the wind had been gusting all day in the area.
