Scheme or dream? When Longmont was founded in 1871, it belonged to the settlement effort that New York and Chicago planners pitched one way to owners of railroads and other national concerns, and quite another to romantics attracted to the westward expansion concept. Dale Bernard, former director of the St. Vrain Historical Society, presents the lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Fee: $5; free to museum members.

Ho-ho-depot Train buffs love riding the 64-mile segment of the former Denver & Rio Grande narrow gauge rail system that helped build Colorado, and traditional holiday fans will enjoy the carol- singing and other seasonal family entertainment. The train departs three times a day — the first train leaves at 9:30 a.m.; the last train leaves at 2:30 p.m. — for Chama, N.M., and back again.
