Nominations are being accepted for The Denver Post Gold Helmet Award, which is celebrating its 57th year of recognizing outstanding young men in Colorado. The deadline is Monday, Dec. 10.
Since 1951, when Bill Faddis of Regis received the first award, The Post annually has honored the top player, scholar and citizen in Colorado schoolboy football.
Last year’s winner was Clay Garcia of Alamosa, a quarterback now at Colorado Mines. The qualifications that must be met to be considered for the award are:
* Nominees must be seniors and have a 3.5 grade-point average or better with a strong academic base.
* They must be involved in multiple activities outside of school.
* They must be named to The Post’s all-state first team. Because The Post will not announce all-state teams until after Dec. 10, anyone nominating a player may call Neil H. Devlin at The Post’s sports department (303-954-1714) to see if that player is being considered for all-state honors.
The Post will announce the winner in the annual Fall All-State section, which also will recognize players and coaches from the fall season’s other eight sports. The winner will receive his trophy before kickoff at the Minnesota-Denver NFL game Dec. 30 at Invesco Field at Mile High.
Nominees must be submitted by athletic directors or coaches only, and letters must be typed on school stationery. Background material on nominees must be mailed to Neil H. Devlin, High School Sports Editor, The Denver Post, 101 W. Colfax, Denver, CO 80202, or faxed to 303-866-9004.
