COLORADO, Colo.—El Paso County Republicans appointed anti-tax crusader Douglas Bruce on Saturday to fill a vacancy in the State Legislature.

The Colorado Springs Gazette reported the El Paso County commissioner got more than twice as many votes as his closest opponent, Reginald Perry.

Bruce takes over the seat that has been held since 2001 by GOP Rep. Bill Cadman. Cadman will be sworn in on Dec. 11 to the Senate District 10 seat that opened up upon Republican Ron May’s Oct. 31 resignation.

To win, the often abrasive Bruce stressed the things he has been criticized for, including pushing for more tax cuts.

In Bruce’s words, “When liberals push silly schemes, I disagree. I’m called disruptive by those who resent dissent.”

Bruce will step down from his county position in mid-January when the Legislature convenes.
