Don Imus returned to talk radio Monday and pledged to be a “better person” after an eight-month exile for racially charged remarks about the women’s basketball team at Rutgers University.

“I will never say anything in my lifetime that will make any of these young women at Rutgers regret and feel foolish that they accepted my apology and forgave me,” Imus said at the beginning of his show.

Imus, who marked his debut with a four-hour benefit show on New York’s WABC, was hired by Las Vegas-based Citadel Broadcasting Corp. to host a morning talk show after CBS Corp. fired him in April. Citadel plans to syndicate Imus’ show. The question remains whether big advertisers will return.
