COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Work to remediate mold at The Classical Academy’s East Elementary Campus is expected to keep students out of school until at least Thursday.
The mold caused officials to cancel classes last week at the charter school.
Some teachers and students have complained of headaches and illnesses that they fear could be caused by the mold.
Environmental Testing Company of Parker found visible stachybotrys and chaetomium mold, both considered toxic, in seven of the school’s 20 modular buildings, specialists Glenn Morris and Doug Ayres said.
In three other buildings, specialists found what they consider to be high levels of mold spores in the air, but no visible mold, they said.
Some buildings will be remediated this week, possibly allowing students to return to them by Thursday, TCA President Mark Hyatt said.
Classes normally held in buildings that will take longer to remediate will move to other Academy School District 20 campuses, he said.
The remediation will cost about $150,000, with the money coming from school reserves, Hyatt said.
About 500 students attend the elementary school, Chief Operating Officer Kevin Collins said.
