Metropolitan State College of Denver’s Board of Trustees voted today to put into place a pay-for-performance plan for 370 professors — but the divisive implementation has been delayed for a year and a half.

In a straw vote last week, professors tied on whether they wanted a pay plan in place that would give them base-building salary raises as well as one-time bonus money for meeting goals in teaching, professional development and service.

Professors said at the time they were concerned about competition between faculty and criteria for raises that hadn’t been worked out yet.

Metro’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved today a delayed plan that will start evaluating professors in January 2009.

The pay plan, which will get an additional $2 million from President Steve Jordan, will have more local control than the previous plan the professors voted on.

Metro State officials and faculty have a year to work out final details of the plan.

Jordan said after the vote everyone seems comfortable.

“Everyone can come back in the fall (of 2008) knowing what the standards will be,” Jordan said. “I think this really showed the board’s commitment to the process.”
