Getting your player ready...

It’s an annual rite of the baseball winter meetings — right there with bad trade rumors thrown out 2 4/7 — for last- place teams to sign overrated players to horrible contracts just so they can tell their fans: “Hey, we’re trying, too!”

The American League’s version of the Washington Generals, the Kansas City Royals, followed the script this week, inexplicably offering outfielder Jose Guillen a three-year, $36 million contract. No sooner was the ink dry on the contract Thursday than Guillen was suspended for the first 15 days of next season for violating baseball’s drug policy.

That’s probably not how the Royals wanted to sell their newest overpaid addition to the lineup to the local fans. What few are left, that is.
