Colorado Springs police arrested a 24-year-old man last night for investigation in the murder of a Fort Carson soldier.
Louis Edward Bressler was arrested in the shooting death of Kevin Shields as he drove into a gas station at Fountain Boulevard and Jetwing Drive at about 9 p.m., according to Lt. Skip Arms, Colorado Springs police spokesman.
Shields’ body was found early Saturday morning by a newspaper carrier. Shields, a native of Roscoe, Ill., had been shot several times, police said.
Shields had survived more than 18 months in Iraq.
As part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 2nd Infantry Division, he had fought in Ramadi for a year, returning to Fort Carson in September 2005.
Shields went to Baghdad with the brigade in October 2006.
Shields’ unit, the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, is scheduled to come home in January, but Army records show Shields came home last May.
A Fort Carson spokeswoman said Shields had come home for “medical reasons.” He had earned the Army’s Good Conduct Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge.
