Colorado State approached Week 3 in its search for a football coach Monday with no leading candidate, at least publicly.
The one candidate CSU athletic director Paul Kowalczyk was known to be interested in, Southern Illinois’ Jerry Kill, could not be reached for comment. Kill was in meetings wrapping up his season, which ended Saturday with a loss to Delaware in the Division I-AA semifinals.
Southern Illinois athletic director Mario Moccia said Monday he had not been contacted by CSU for permission to talk to his coach. Kowalczyk has not talked to the media during his search.
Kowalczyk, who was AD at Southern Illinois before taking the CSU job in April 2006, hired Kill as the Salukis’ coach in 2001.
Applications closed Monday for the CSU position, which opened when Sonny Lubick was forced out after 15 seasons. If a new coach isn’t named by the end of the week, players won’t get to meet their coach for a month. Final exams end Friday, and the spring semester doesn’t begin until Jan. 22.
One coach who acknowledged sending in his resume is former Michigan State coach John L. Smith, a former assistant at Wyoming. Smith said Monday he has not been contacted by CSU.
Wyoming hires coordinator.
Bob Cole was hired as Wyoming’s new offensive coordinator. Cole, who was at Florida A&M in the same position, has produced nationally ranked offenses at Montana, Portland State and Utah State.
