A poll released Tuesday showed that two trailing candidatesformer Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. — stand a better chance than their competition against the rival party’s frontrunner.

The CNN-ap Research Poll of 1,002 adults showed that Edwards would beat former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani in a hypothetical showdown for the White House, 53 percent to 44 percent, while McCain would edge out Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., 50 percent to 48 percent.

Edwards is running third behind Clinton and Barack Obama, D-Ill., in nationwide polls of Democrats; McCain is tied for fourth with former Sen. Fred Thomp son, R-Tenn., in surveys of Republicans.
