Town residents in April will vote to have a vote on any future land sales concerning land around the historic Stanley Hotel.

Town trustees on Tuesday night voted unanimously, 5-0, to reject a citizen-initiated ordinance that would require a vote among the town’s 4,200 registered voters of approval on terms and conditions in the potential sale of any town property within the Stanley Historic District. After rejecting the ordinance, trustees passed a resolution placing on the April municipal election ballot.

The Colorado Constitution grants voters the right to a public vote on citizen-initiated ordinances, town officials said.

Last month, a group of voters presented petitions containing more than 760 signatures calling for an ordinance to require voter approval on sales.

Residents asked for the ordinance to block the construction of condos, a shopping plaza, restaurant and wedding reception hall next to the iconic Stanley.

The famed hotel, built in 1906, has hosted luminaries such as President Theodore Roosevelt and was author Stephen King’s inspiration for the horror classic “The Shining.”
