PUEBLO, Colo.—Kansas authorities are reviewing a request by Colorado for water to supplement agricultural wells in dry years and to supply a permanent pool for wildlife at John Martin Reservoir on the Arkansas River in southeast Colorado.

Kansas authorities pledged to meet with Coloradans on the issue next month, said Steve Witte, a Colorado water division engineer.

Colorado has until March 31 to complete the purchase of the water and has already spent $700,000 on engineering.

“There was no decision made (at the annual meeting of the Arkansas River Compact Administration this week), but they are trying to work out the logjam over this issue,” Witte said.

The administration was formed in 1949 after the two states formed the Arkansas River Compact.
