Two days after saying he will be “exonerated,” embattled Broncos punter Todd Sauerbrun spoke Wednesday about being cited for simple assault.
“It’s been very hurtful,” Sauerbrun said. “I never laid a hand on the guy, and everyone thinks I’m this monster. I’m not. At the end of the day, I will be cleared, but the problem is everyone thinks I’m this bad guy and I’m not. I didn’t do it.”
Early Saturday morning, Sauerbrun was cited for simple assault against a taxicab driver outside a Cherry Creek restaurant. Sauerbrun is accused of hitting the driver in the back of the head with his hand. Sauerbrun said he hopes this trying week will culminate in a strong game at Houston tonight.
“I’m planning on going and kicking the ball like crazy,” he said. “It’s been a tough week.”
Winborn extended.
The Broncos signed backup linebacker Jamie Winborn to a two-year contract extension. Winborn has been a special-teams ace and is might vie for a starting spot next season after spending training camp in the Broncos’ system.
Footnotes.
Wide receiver Brandon Stokley, trying to recover from a knee injury, didn’t practice for a second consecutive day. He is listed as questionable.”I think it’s going to be a game-time decision,” Stokely said. “We’ll see how it goes. I can deal with pain, but if it’s not stable, it’s hard to run routes on a knee that doesn’t feel right.” Safety Nick Ferguson will miss the game with a knee injury. NFL Network play-by-play announcer Bryant Gumbel, who is ill, will not call tonight’s game. Tom Hammond will fill in for Gumbel.
