Pharmaceutical company Merck & Co. has recalled about 1 million doses of a children’s vaccine this week, due to manufacturing conditions that could have allowed contamination.
The company is asking health care providers to not administer any additional doses of the Hib vaccine, for Haemophilus b Conjugate, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment.
No adverse health events have been reported following vaccination with the recalled product, according to state health officials, and children who received the vaccine do not need to be revaccinated.
The Hib vaccine prevents a dangerous form of bacterial meningitis. Potentially contaminated Hib vaccine doses that ended up in Colorado were distributed through the Vaccines for Children program to private physicians and clinics.
