This recipe, from neighbors Bill and Pat Culkin, was jotted on a paper plate.
Ingredients
3/4 cup of shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup molasses
1/2 teaspoon clove
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
2 cups flour
Sugar for dipping
Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large bowl, cream shortening, sugar, egg and molasses. Add dry ingredients. Mix well. Roll into balls. Dip top in sugar. Place on greased cookie sheet and gently press a fork into the top of each cookie to flatten. Bake 8-10 minutes.
Wine ideas:
The sweetness and warmth of rye whiskey is an excellent match for these dark, spicy cookies. Look for Old Potrero from Anchor Distilling in California, Heaven Hill’s Rittenhouse Rye out of Kentucky, or the new Tuthilltown Rye out of New York state.
