The University of Wyoming women’s soccer team on Monday hired Danny Sanchez as coach, grabbing one of Colorado’s most successful collegiate coaches.
Sanchez posted a 128-11-7 record in six seasons as head coach at Metro State, where he led the Roadrunners to NCAA Division II national championships in 2006 and 2004. He was voted the 2004 D-II coach of the year and was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference coach of the year each of his six seasons. His teams won the RMAC championship and qualified for the NCAA Tournament the past six seasons.
“We are thrilled to hire someone of Danny’s experience and stature as our new soccer coach,” Wyoming athletic director Tom Burman said. “His reputation in the Front Range soccer community and on a national level is second to none.”
Sanchez also was Metro State’s director of soccer operations, overseeing the men’s and women’s teams. He replaces Anne Moore, who coached the Cowgirls from 1999-2007 and retired in November after posting a 63-91-17 record.
DU’s AD gets extension.
The University of Denver extended the contract of athletic director Peg Bradley-Doppes, signing her to a five-year extension through the 2012-13 school year. “I consider it a privilege to remain a Pioneer for the next five years,” Bradley-Doppes said.
Rage coach to direct Northern team.
Rocky Mountain Rage coach Tracy Egeland will be the Northern Conference team coach for the 2008 CHL All-Star Game on Jan. 16 at the Broomfield Event Center. Egeland has led the Rage to a 17-2-2 record and a league- best .857 winning percentage. The Rage has already clinched the conference’s best record through the first half of the season, which ends Sunday.
Metro’s Cito honored.
Metro State’s Nicole Cito was named a Division II second-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association, and Roadrunners Rachel Zollner and Becca Mays were named to the third team.
Cito earned second-team honors for the second consecutive season. Zollner was a first-team pick in 2006. Mays is on the team for the first time.
Denver senior midfielder Jenna Billingsley was named to the NSCAA Div. I all-Central Region first team.
CC tight end an All-American.
Colorado College senior tight end Nolan Swett was named an NCAA Division III first-team All-American by . Swett earlier was named to the first team all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
UCCS names first soccer coach.
The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs hired Nichole Rick as its women’s soccer coach, athletic director Stephen Kirkham said. The Mountain Lions will field a women’s soccer team for the first time next year.
Rick was most recently the boys and girls coach at the Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs, where she led the boys team to a Class 3A state championship appearance and a 17-1-1 record.
