United Airlines parent UAL Corp. said its passenger traffic will be down this quarter while unit costs and unit revenue will be up.

United said its flight capacity measured by available seat miles will be down 0.5 percent for the fourth quarter of this year, while traffic measured by revenue passenger miles will be down 1.25 percent to 1.75 percent. The figures include United’s mainline operation and its United Express regional jet partner flying.

United expects its fourth quarter passenger unit revenue to increase 11 percent to 12 percent compared with the year-ago quarter.

United’s unit costs measured by mainline operating cost per available seat miles excluding fuel and special items, which does not include the airline’s United Express regional jet partners, will be up about 7.5 percent for the fourth quarter this year compared with the year-ago quarter.
