Mosley signs on for three books

Farewell, Easy Rawlins. Hello, Leonid McGill. Mystery writer Walter Mosley has agreed to write three novels for Riverhead Books, two of which will feature McGill, a sleuth based in New York City. Mosley first used McGill in the short story “Karma.”

“I’ve long thought of Walter Mosley as one of the great American writers,” Riverhead executive editor Sean McDonald said in a statement. “His work is consistently provocative and exciting, delivered with a style and power that is uniquely his own.”

Mosley, 55, is best known for “Devil in the Blue Dress,” “Black Betty” and other novels in his Rawlins series. His last book featuring the Los Angeles private eye, “Blonde Faith,” was published this fall. The Associated Press

Beacon Street Girls

Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing has picked up the rights to the Beacon Street Girls series in a deal that will expand the books’ reach worldwide.

Aladdin M!X — the publishing company’s tween imprint started last spring to appeal to 9- to 13-year-old readers — will launch the series in May by reissuing versions of the existing 14 books and publishing the new “Katani’s Jamaican Holiday.”

The parent-friendly Beacon Street Girls series was designed to help preteen girls who are “between toys and boys” deal positively with adolescent issues.

First Line

Murder on K Street by Margaret Truman

Washington smells good in springtime. The air is fresh and pure. The sweet scent of cherry blossoms is carried by gentle breezes from the Potomac and Chesapeake Bay, lifting spirits and promising renewal. Until…

Until spring fades to summer, turning the nation’s capital into a domed stadium that traps the heat and humidity — as well as the stench of whatever political scandal might linger from the winter — and releasing foul vapors from the swamp on which the city is built, stinging the nostrils and eyes and erasing memories of springtime.
