A fire Saturday evening in an apartment building at 2500 South York Street in Denver sent two occupants to Denver Health Medical Center and displaced about 20 residents, Denver Fire officials said.

Division Chief Joseph Gonzales, a fire department spokesman, said he did not know the condition of the two who were transported to the hospital.

The fire started in a second floor apartment of the four-story structure, which had about 30 units, Gonzales said. Officials requested Red Cross assistance for residents displaced by the fire, which firefighters extinguished by 7:30 p.m. They then worked to vent smoke from the building.

Fire officials said residents would not be allowed back in the building Saturday night. They asked for Regional Transportation District buses to assist displaced residents.
