The University of Denver’s Tyler Ruegsegger scored a goal and Rhett Rakhshani added an assist Saturday to help the U.S. National Junior hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Russia in a preliminary-round game at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in Liberec, Czech Republic.

Team USA (3-0) earned a bye into Friday’s semifinals, but must play one more preliminary game, against Finland on Monday.

• Denver native Drew Shore, who committed to playing for the University of Denver as a freshman in 2009, opened the scoring with a short-handed goal as the U.S. National under-17 team got goals from seven players in an 8-0 win over Canada’s Team Atlantic in the opening game of the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge at the John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario.

Adams State wrestler reaches quarterfinals.

Adams State’s Jared Deaguero earned a 9-8 decision over No. 5-ranked Vince Jones of Nebraska, then got an 8-2 win over Andy Silber of American University to advance to the quarterfinal round of the multidivision Midlands Championships at Northwestern’s Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill.

Deaguero will face Nebraska-Kearney’s Derek Ross in the quarterfinals.
